Close Call For The LaSalle Baby An excerpt from the book "HURRICANE AUDREY" by Nola Mae Ross “My
eight-month-old baby, Melvin,” says Mrs. Susie LaSalle, “had pneumonia.
So on the Thursday morning when Hurricane Audrey hit, we left early and
stopped at the Dix Clinic in Creole, hoping to get medical help.
We became stranded in the clinic with about 30 people.
When the huge waves hit the clinic it took off like a bullet. The whole clinic sailed across the water.
To stop its mad flight we opened all the windows and doors to make it
sink before it hit the deep water of the Intracoastal Canal.
The water came gushing in and we all tried to get in the attic." “I
handed my baby, Melvin, up to someone in the attic.
But they dropped him! In
horror, I watched him go under the water and float away from me, face down!
I grabbed for him but he was swirled out of my reach.
Only his little blue romper suit was sticking above the water.
As I struggled to reach him a big dresser washed between us.
I couldn’t get around it so I panicked!
The other people in the clinic were yelling, ‘The baby’s gone!
It’s too late. You can’t
save him now." "But I wouldn’t give up! When a piece of board, with a nail on it, floated near my hand. I grabbed it and swung it toward the little blue romper suit. The nail snagged the rompers. Quickly I pulled my baby to me and clutched Melvin tightly. We were hurriedly lifted into the attic and I kept holding him close. Everyone said he was dead! But I knew he was alive. He stayed warm and when I rubbed his back, water would spurt out of his mouth. I knew God wouldn’t let him die after just having saved him.” "The next morning my baby was moving and breathing. We were finally able to get him to a hospital in Lake Charles. He recovered completely." Want
